Heeeeeeeeeellllllllllllllllllllloooooooooooooo Dakka! Hi, I'm still new here Some of you may recognize me from the thread with DLS's The Death of the Emperor (freaking epic) fluff. I'm the guy who posts the "MOAR!" pictures... Anyways, on topic, I recently ordered (and recieved!!) the Imperial Space Marine from Forge World, and I'm unaware of anyone else having done one and posted it on Dakka so far so I decided I might as well be the one to do it. Chances are I'm wrong and someone here DOES have pics of one up, and if I am, PLEASE post the links to that persons work. He's the great big one (for those of you unfamiliar with him: http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/scmarine.htm ) This is my first time posting any of my work, let alone work in progress, on Dakka, so please go easy on me, as I'm a mediocre artist at best I just got him and am taking him out've the package and cleaning him while typing this, (smoke breaks, not four hands ) and fighting with dad for the camera... I'll be posting pictures as I go along at various stages, and any suggestions are more than welcome!

ps... GW Modeling Glue =\= good with FW.

For resin you want to use superglue or 5 min epoxy resin with lots of pins in that guy.

Ok so I'm still fightin for custody of the camera cable, but so far I have him cleaned, washed and primed (B&W - White Arms, Pauldrons, Legs, Feet, Helmet, Chest and pack, everything else (Bolter, 'nades, knife) are done in Black). For using a spray gun, is the ratio of Paint to Water any different than "usual" when you're using a Foundation as opposed to just regular GW paint? If I'm lucky I'll have some pictures up in the next few hours!

Of course, just not pre-prime or pre-clean. I'll most likey paint each piece individually and then VERY CAREFULY pin what needs be pinned, as I HATE trying to paint into little tiny areas. I know right? I was almost giddy when I picked it up from the post office. Then I almost screamed at the ammount due for customs... Then I spent 4 hours cleaning it, trying my damnedest not to slash my finger open... Now I've JUST put the first coat down on the base and am waiting for it to dry to hit (more like abuse) it with Badab Black. I share, see?

Did that to myself working on my Chaplain/Furioso Dreadnought... That sucker went right down to the bone and the doctors refused to stitch it because of where it was. I was back home in an hour working away with my finger in a splint. (I know it doesn't look like much, but it was like a pyramid-shaped chunk out've my finger, and I have big hands, so perspective perspective perspective

Definately Blood Angels, Xanthos. Though, to be honest, if I find I *really* enjoy doing this one, I'll definately be ordering a 2nd from FW and painting that one Dark Templar :3

Looking forward to seeing more of this, I've thought about getting one for myself a few times, seeing you paint it will likely clinch it as something I'll have to get.

Thanks for all the support so far guys, it's encouraging as hell! 'Specialy since it may influence BishopGores decision - I'd suggest doing it, as it even says on the FW page it's a limited run because they don't know when the moulds will crash. I just suggest getting priority shipping, as the 31 day wait almost made my head go splodey! In the next few pictures I finished up the base, and I must say I think it kicks some serious Heretics Booty!!

For anyone curious about the technical side: I started with a black undercoat and followed it up with one coat of unmixed Codex Grey thinned out a tiny bit. (Pics in the previous progress post.) (#1) Once that was thoroughly dried I almost poured the Badab on and worked it around, leaving A LOT on the pillar bases around its top edges so it would run down into the grooves for a natural sooty look. (#2) Next I VERY LIGHTLY drybrushed with a layer of Shadow Grey and poked it into corners with a little more force and then used a mix of Chaos Black and White and made a batch of grey that was about 3 shades darker than Codex and drybrushed it on liberally. (#3, 4, 5 & 6) The Second, Third and Fouth coats of grey were done the exact same way, just adding more white to taste and less pressure on the brush. Finally for the dirt look I used a home-made wash based on the old Vermin Fur from one've the old 17.5ml pots that I typically use to stain my purity seals. I put a lot into the cracks in the pavement below the rubble and a gentle dry-brushed poking on all the small rubble around the bigger chunks! Oh and the spent shell casings are pure Shining Gold. I'll hit them with a super dark-red wash to brass them up shortly. All that's left for the base (besides a mat clear coat) is to put a tiny bit of static grass growing out've the pavement cracks. Suggestions, Comments? Spit 'em up.

Ok, I just got through the 3rd coat of pinking his body (Pinking is a term that should be familiar to anyone who paints with the bastard child of paints - Red*) and he's too wet to handle and mess around with, as he's perfectly balanced up against things. Now I'm going to have his cigarette (SMOKING BAD!! Very Bad.) and decide if I have enough left in me to start on the non-red bitz... That Bolter does look ever so sweet.....


* This term can also be applied to Yellow and White. DAMN YOU YELLOW!!

hahahahaha oh menziez.... And yes, according to FW it's 6" tall, but I get the feeling it's a bit more. He's still in pieces, awaiting painting so making a comparison at this point would be difficult, but if I had to guess I'd say he's taller than my (ugly as sin) Drop Pod... I can't wait to get started on this giant 'Fething Fether', it'll be my first time using my new ($300!!!) air brush (http://www.grexusa.com/grexairbrush/pics/m_Genesis.XB.jpg). Thankfuly I also have... Either 16 or 22, can't remember, Assault Marines that I've been putting off to practice on and work any kinks out on, so someone is getting assigned 'Bob Duty' again. Poor bugger. Now that I think about it, I've bitten off a lot here... I have the Biggie Marine on the go now, plus that small horde of assault marines to paint, a LR Redeemer, 4 servitors, a slightly customized command squad (WIP, Jump Packs, but the banner looks like ASS cause my free hand ability is ASS), my servo-harness techmarine (WIP) and a Land Speeder Tempest... Oh yea and planning on and haven't gotten around to putting a heavy flamer on one've the Termies that came out've my AoBR set. Seesh Dat dere be a lot a 'umies. Should keep me busy for a while atleast.


And whoever finds the humor in the pics of the base I posted gets on my friend list hehe

Great thread. I've been waffling back and forth on whether I want this model, or not, for a long time. I'll watch your progress and see how things go!

I personally think it's well worth the purchase though a little spendy. Personally I waited till a special occassion to merit it, but it's one of their models they are doing a short(year or so ) run on then will archive for a while.

Not too bad, Empchild, a few minor flash lines, but no major imperfections or anything. The only really "Oh God" part was the huge leftover bits from the injection points on the base and for his torso, but a sharp pair of cutters, a pile of files and some sand paper and they came right off =] And I can't stress enough to people on this site, if you can afford one, and feel ambitious, GET THIS MODEL!!! You will NOT be disappointed. Just make sure you get priority shipping, less your head get splodey from waiting like mine did. I don't know what kind've progress is going to be made today, as the airgun isn't ready to go yet, so today will probably be a very slow day of just painting his accesories (Guns, Knife, Ammo Packs and Grenades) but I'll still post pictures of what I've done.

Idea for you since they have tose two amazing heads. I drilled out the helment on mine and used it on the base this way you can show the face and the helment. Worth a try since this model has so much awsomeness! I cannot wait to see how you paint yours up!

Actually I suck at and hate painting skin, so I'm only going to use the helmet, I do however fully plan on painting the unhelmeted head afterwards, and if it turns out I like it... Iunno, it might just force me into buying a second one so I can use the head. lol Who am I kidding? I'm almost certain I'll be grabbing another

Ok, so today is not a fun day for posting things, my internet keeps crapping out every less than 5 minutes, and it's really making me angry, so it's been a real pain to upload anything. I took some pictures of the pinking I did last night, including some pictures of the unhelmeted head, just for you Empchild lol. Aside from that I haven't done anything but put the metal on the scope But I'll get into the groove shortly, promise. For now, here's the pictures of the pinkied marine.

Ok, so it took me most of the day but I managed to get through the knife, it's scabbard, the two grenades and the two ammo packs, and I'm starting on the guns and scope (which I broke...) now! Just not 100% sure how I want to do them. But in the mean time here's his accessories! Does anyone else think the scabbard would look better with a thinned down layer of 'ard coat? I can't decide



The two ammos packs are simply goblin green with a healthy double coating of badab, the straps are Snakebite Leather and the metal is Chainmail that's added after the badab has set. The frag grenade is Dark Angels Green with a lot of badab and then highlighted with DAG again. The... whatever blue striped one... Is Ice Blue over Shadow Grey, all metal on both nades is BGM. The knife is BGM with Mithril silver edging and highlighting, the hand guard and pommel are a 4:1 mix of Shining Gold and Mechrite Red with an additional 20% water. The hilt is Shadow Grey over Chaos Black with a light badab'bing.

Ok so today was an adventure in patience! I got the compressor working, I got my storage tank to quit leaking, I worked the technical kinks out've using my air brush and I waited for about 70 layers of paint to dry... Suffice to say, my back hurts like hell, but he's basecoated!!! I'm still going to dry brush a single coat of BR onto him to bring the natural sheen of the paint back, hopefuly; without making it look toyish. But for now, he's awesome and I'm turning back to the bolters for the night to let him cure, but in the mean time, here he is!



And as for the finger slicing, for anyone who is interested, it was for this guy... Also, please note, Dakka, I'm HORRIBLY unoriginal, so you'll probably recognize his paint job, as it's based off of someones on here. Please don't hang me for plagerism



His right shoulder is magneted, and his Weapos (2nd CCW, Lascannon, Autocannon and Plasmacannon, I'll grab bolter arms eventually... Probably when I order my next ISM) are all magneted too. His hips are magnets too so he can swivel about happily. He's my most, and only, articular model!

it's looking great so far, i think you could always youse the space marine for terrain, Very Expensive Terrain.

Wow. The airbrushed red looks fantastic. If I'm going to get a model of this size I will definitely have to get one of those, the smoothness of the texture is beautiful.

I like EmpChild's idea of pinning the two heads. I reckon you could do really well with such a large model with the flesh tones, make a fantastic contrast with the very bright clean red, ruddy, darkened flesh tones.

Oh you're quite right, Bishop, the unhelmeted head could easily be made to look really impressive, but I'm not a huge fan of how it sits on the model, plus I'm still "afraid" to try and paint the head for any sort of display purposes... I will eventually paint it though, just for the practice it'll give. But the red really came out amazingly. Now that I've seen it in natural daylight I'm REALLY REALLY REALLY happy about it, there's only one area I need to touch up at all. However!!! Using the air brush isn't as easy as it's made out to be. There's a LOT of technique involved, techniques I learned in high school automotives and have had years to practice since. And what kind of airbrush you buy makes a HUGE difference. The cheapy little one from GW, it looks like a little flamer-pistol, is a total piece of "fething gak" as the word filter would say, and isn't worth your $45. The one I bought is massively professional grade and cost me $300 (CND), while painfuly expensive it's absolutely worth every penny. Not only do you get the sweet sweet finish of an air brush, but now speed basecoating isn't a sin that makes models look horrible!

In short, if you're going to buy an airbrush make sure you buy quality and make sure you spend some time practicing using it. I'd suggest buying a bottle of cheap acrylic to use for practice. Just use it on a piece of wood or something until you get your technique and timing down and you've become comfortable using it, THEN try using it on your mini's. Waste not want not right?
